CH-CH-CHANGES

Day 11 of the WEGO Health Activist Writer's Month Challenge poses this challenge: "Imagine your blog having it's own theme song. What would it be?"

Thankfully the answer sprung immediately to mind: Bowie's CHANGES. (Listen to it here.) The lyrics, when viewed through the spectacle of breast cancer, take on a whole new meaning. See if you agree...

Still don't know what I was waiting for
And time was running wild, a million dead-end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
*
So I turned myself to face me
But I never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see this faker
I'm much too fast to take the test
*
Ch-ch-changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-changes
(Didn't want to have to be a richer [wo]man)
*
Ch-ch-changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-changes
(I just wanted to be a better [wo]man)
*
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
*
I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But the days never seem the same
*
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
They're immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

*
Ch-ch-changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-changes
(Don't tell them to grow up and out of it)

*
Ch-ch-changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-changes
(Where's your shame, you've left us up to our necks in it)
*
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
*
Strange fascination, fascinating me
Ah changes are taking the pace I'm going through

*
Ch-ch-changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-changes
(Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers)

*
Ch-ch-changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-changes
(Pretty soon now we're all gonna get older)
*
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

*
I said that time may change me
I can't trace time.
No no.

  1. Oh, Renn, this is perfect! I love David Bowie anyway, and this song says it all. I had never really focused on the lyrics before. Now I see how related to health/cancer they really are. Great pick! I'm eager to see what Day 12 brings us. It surely is an adventure, a ch-ch-change for us! xx

  2. This is clever. I am a Bowie fan myself and was singing along to the lyrics as I read them. I love the line about time changing me..but i can't trace time..yes indeed! Excellent choice!
